OOC information:

Character name: Soradin
Class: Warlock

Why do you want to join the Cult?:

I just came back from over a year long brake and wanted to get back on the RP side of this game. I love the forsaken roleplay and sought a guild that did just that. Then I found your website.

How did you come to learn about the Cult:

Through the realm forums. I saw the guild tag on some post there and felt intrigued.

Anything else you'd like us to know?

I've been playing this charachter on and off since the server launch. Most of that time I spent in the old lordaeron back in the day. I mostly lean on the rp side of things rather than the actual game content, which can be seen from the low gear and level this charachter. Although now I've decided to change that as well. Also, I am a casual player and hence might not be able to login every night, but I always notify when I need to be away for longer periods of time.

Oh, and I also love to write long and sometimes slightly boring stories as you may notice from the IC application. If you choose to accept me to your ranks, you can expect me to fill your forums with those. Smile

By the way, I somehow managed to skip past the part where it said that you don't need to register before applying, so I went ahead and did just that. And now it's apparently waiting for a moderators approval. Therefore the odd name in this post.

IC application:

(( note: this serves as a comeback story and as a short version of Soradin's background. Hence the obscene length. Hope it's not too long though. ))

'Night falls quicker and heavily than ever before' Mathis thought to
himself. He had been silently watching the dusk paint the landscape red,
followed by the pitch black night from a small, stained window. The other
four refugees were still outside the abandoned hovel they took shelter in,
hunting and foraging, readying themselves for the long trip to Stormwind.

They were among the few that had survived the conquering of Southshore and
they have travelled for two days without a good night's rest, not until
they found this old cabin. It seemed to have belonged to a hunter, as there
were trophies of all manner of forest creatures hung upon the walls. On the
floor, infront of a small fireplace was a bear pelt. Other than that, the
cabin's interior was rather modest, a small table with two chairs and a
bookcase, with no books on it.

As the others left to gather supplies, he was charged to look after the
cabin and whatever belongings they happened to have a chance to take with
them. He slowly took a book from his backpack. One of the few things he
simply had to take with him. The book had a golden frame all around the
leather cover, it looked expensive. The pages were stained and fragile as
it had once been completely soaked in water. But Mathis always handled it
with care.

On the cover it read 'The journal of Elias Farrad'. He always shuddered
when he read that name, as the memories of his former friend and the events
of that time flooded into his thoughts. He would never forget. How could he
ever forget? Suddenly, a faint flash of light somewhere in the woods nearby
interrupted his thoughts. He quickly peered through the window, straining
to see something in the darkness. But he saw nothing.

'Must've been my imagination' he said silently to the empty cabin. He had
been on the edge lately and would probably be until they would finally reach the
safety of Stormwind.

He opened the book infront of him. He carefully flipped the pages to where
he had stopped reading previously. He had read it nearly to the end. The
book chronicled the slow descent of his friend, Elias, to madness and
strange untold powers. Elias once was like him, a guardsman of Southshore,
but he came from a wealthy family and so, was more sophisticated and more
educated than Mathis. The journal depicted how Elias defied his father and
went on his way to join the alliance military forces and was ultimately
stationed in Southshore. How he befriended Raodel or Raol as he was
commonly known. How he fell in love with Raol's sister, Annbeth, and their
life together. And then...

Then Elias found something. Some kind of an orb. Eventhough Elias had
written a lot about it, Mathis couldn't make heads or tails of it, as at
that time, the writing had turned erratic and confusing. Surely this was
the turning point in Elias' life and marked the beginning of those horrible
events. It seemed to imbue him with powers, dark and powerful. Powers that
no man should ever tamper with. Then Elias did the unthinkable, he killed
his love, Annbeth, and was ultimately disposed of by Raol's hand.
Mathis remembered those confused, rage and tear filled eyes as Raol cried
and held his sister's dead body on his arms. Elias lying on the ground
bleeding his life away, with a letter opener stabbed through his jaw. They
had thrown his body into the ocean, as Raol's rage couldn't permit him be
buried. Mathis trembled slightly as he relived those moments again in his
thoughts.

Suddenly his train of thought was interrupted as he remembered his current
predicament. How long had he been reading and reminiscing? Surely the
others should have come back by now. He started to scan the terrain visible
from the window, hoping to see a glimpse of his friends. But the night was
silent and not even the shadows moved.

Then, with a loud bang, the cabin's door shattered by a bolt of formless
shadows. Shocked and confused, Mathis went for his sword. Guided more by
the acquired instinct of years of training and guard duty than reason. On
the door frame, appeared a shadowy figure that quickly waved it's hand
towards Mathis and he fell to his chair, immobilized and eyes widened in
terror. The sword slipped from his grip and clanged on the floor. Mathis
couldn't move, locked into place by terror, but he could see and hear and
speak.

'W-who a-a-are you?!' He managed to stutter as his teeth clattered. The
figure slowly approached him and calmly proceeded to sit on the other end
of the table, straight infront of Mathis. Now he could see the invader on
the faint tablecandle's light. It was an undead, a skulking, skeletal
apparition that seemed to be missing it's lower jaw. It's face and other
visible parts were littered with scars, most of them gaping open and would
never heal, as it is with dead flesh. It wore a long robe and strange
trinkets around it's neck. On it's hand was a staff that ended in a cross
shaped symbol.

'I believe you have something of mine, Mathis.' The creature spoke. Mathis
couldn't fathom how it did it, since it was missing it's jaw. But
nevertheless, it had a voice, a bit guttural and echoy but understandable.
He immediately felt a hint of recognition in that voice that send chills
down his spine. He tried to scream, scream for help, but couldn't. The
terror he felt prevented it and only a faint wheeze escaped his lungs.

'No bother screaming for help, Mathis. Your friends are already dead.' The
creature said calmly, coldly, with no hint of emotion.

'W-w-who...?' Mathis tried to ask again, but just as the word escaped his
lips, he felt an even more gripping terror as he finally understood who it
was that had so boldly invaded the cabin. He stopped shaking and his eyes
widened even more, purely out of surprise.

'Elias?' He whispered without a stutter. The creature nodded slightly and
the remnants of it's upper lip twisted into a horrifying grin. Did it try
to smile? Mathis thought irrationally. Nevertheless, the expression was
cold and uncaring.

'Elias... There is a name known by few. I am mostly known by another these
days.'
Soradin said after a slight pause.

'It took me sometime to track you down, Mathis. Imagine my surprise to have
woken up unto a world in turmoil and seeing that our beloved Southshore was
no more.'

After another pause he continued.

'It has truly been a long time, old friend.' And he flashed that horrible
smile again.

Mathis remained silent, still trying to wrap his mind around this new,
strange turn of events.

'So much have happened, Mathis, after you and the sorry lot in Southshore
threw me into the ocean. You honestly thought that you could simply dispose
of me and continue your lives merrily?'
Soradin said with a hint of venom
in his voice.

'As you can see, it did not quite turn that way.' And that smile again.

'Do you remember Raol?' Soradin suddenly asked. Mathis still couldn't speak
a thing.

'My dearest of friends and the brother of my love... Can you imagine that
he walks amongst the dead as well? He, who so vehemently hated the
forsaken. And can you imagine, that even still, he bears a grudge against
me?'
Soradin let out a chilling laughter.

Of course Mathis remembered, Raol was his friend as well. Raol who had
disappeared without a trace some two years ago. Elias had to be lying, he
thought. As if Soradin had sensed his thoughts he quickly added.
'I am not lying to you, Mathis. Why would I?' And smiled yet again. Then he
let out a sigh before continuing.

'But alas... As enjoyable as it is to reminiscent with you, old friend,
that is not the reason for my visitation and I must cut this reunion short.
I am looking for something of mine and I suspect you already know what it
is. Then, let us not draw this out any longer but tell me where my journal
is.'
Soradin said in a commanding voice.

Mathis had no intention of following Elias' commands, but his eyes betrayed
him as he quickly glanced at the open book on the table. It took only a
fraction of a second, but was noticeable nevertheless.

Soradin slowly turned his gaze on the table and on the open book. Upon
realising that it truly was his journal, all trace of amusement vanished
from his expression. Mathis thought that he would have gone pale if he
could. Slowly, with trembling hands Soradin reached towards the book. Upon
touching it and feeling the pages of the journal he shuddered visibly as if
invisible hands had shook him. It did stirr something inside him that
affected his whole being. He picked it up and carefully leafed through some
of the pages. Then after a time that felt like an eternity to Mathis,
Soradin finally spoke again.

'Thank you, Mathis... For taking such a good care of it. This, my most
beloved possession.'
Soradin hid the book somewhere inside the foldings of
his robe.

'Now, I must take my leave. 'Til we meet again, old friend.' And with that,
Soradin rose to his feet and began to walk out the door. For a second
Mathis thought that he was spared, but as the creature, formerly known as
Elias and now by something else, stepped out to the pitch black night and
simply by waving his hand without even stopping or looking at the cabin,
made the doorframe burst into flames. It ate through the old, dry wood
quickly and spread to the roof, the floor and the walls. Quickly and with a
terrifying determination the fire crept towards Mathis. He still couldn't
move, but now he could scream. And scream he would until the fire finally
consumed him as well.

Soradin summoned his Felsteed and began his return to Undercity. Now he had
his journal once again. It was not simply a matter of yearning for the
memories it contained that had drove him to track down the journal, but
there was something else in it that he sought. Somewhere hidden in the many
passages, were the means to call out to his friends, his mentors that once
resided within the now shattered orb. His plans were going along nicely,
and he could not help but smile that cold horrifying smile. But now, he
needed aid, and there was a letter to be sent to accomplish just that.

----

"Greetings,

I am known as Soradin and write this letter to whomever it may concern.
Long have I slumbered unaffected by the workings of this world. Now, have I
risen to witness a world changed beyond recognition. Everything that I
might have formerly had has vanished, and I realise that I must start anew.

I seek a place to further my knowledge in the ways of the shadow and upon
discovering your faction, decided to extend this formal request to you.

Therefore, I am no stranger to the teachings of the forgotten shadow and
it's philosophies, but alas, find convergence more often than once to those
of my own.

I therefore offer my knowledge and understanding of the shadow arts to your
disposal, should you so choose.

For the Forsaken. For Sylvanas.

Soradin"
