Short Story
The wind picked up again and blew several leaves around the sodden feet of the lone Forsaken as she pressed on through the constant drizzle and hail under shrouded moonlight towards the faint silhouette of the spires of Brill off on the horizon. She paused momentarily to make sure her books were still safe and dry in a leather pouch she carried under her armpit. They were. With a slight crack of the neck and flick of the wrists she continued.
After what felt like days she arrived at the rusty gates of Brill and quickly glanced around through the down-pour in search of the Inn. Finally locating it she marched towards the large splintered door and banged on it several times, causing the many bolts on the other side to rattle. She waited.
"Who is it and what do you want, disturbing me out of my slumber." A voice from within called out.
"I'll give you three seconds." She responded, clearly annoyed and wanting to get shelter.
"Se..Serenos?...One moment!" One by one the sounds of bolts and locks rattled and the Inn's doors slowly opened inward, revealing the hunchbacked Innkeeper.
"Quickly get in, the maggots will be all over you if you stay in that rain." He waves her in and she passes him without hesitation or even acknowledgment. "I'll get a fire started" He went on.
"No need, I shan't be here long" Serenos replied. "The book...where is the book?"
"Book...err..what book? We have many books." The innkeeper gestures towards the countless bookshelves strewn around the hall.
"You know which one, I come here every year to see it" She replied wiping the droplets from her face.
"Aah, how foolish of me...I must be getting brain rot, come."
The Innkeeper begins to lead her down the hall and into the main room with the many tables strewn with candles of varying heights. He pauses for a moment, as if he is thinking hard. Serenos was about to tell him to hurry when he continued to walk. He lead her to the biggest book case in the room. Tomes, encyclopedias, biographies and tales packed every shelf. Some in worse condition than others.
"Well?" Serenos barked.
"Right here!" He replied.
He grabbed a nearby stool and brought it over to the book case and climbed onto it. With his left hand firmly holding a shelf he stretched his right arm up as far as he could. With a short grunt he grabbed a book, a dark green tome caked in cobwebs, he gave it a quick blow and handed it down to Serenos. She snatches it from his grasp and her hands quake somewhat as she spins around and marches back towards the entrance.
"Don't worry your little self, I'll bring it back tomorrow." She yells over the sound of the outside hail that had gotten even heavier. She shoves the book into her leather pouch with the other books, places it back under her arm, take's a deep breath and walks back out into the murky, windswept darkness leaving the Innkeeper to shut the door after her. The hunched man watches her as she dissapears back into the darkness which she came. With a small sigh he closes the door.
